Crafting diary: envelope cushion cover (and my first time making something with a sewing machine)

27/05/2026

Now, I've been sewing by hand since I was about 10 years old, and while I'm confident in my abilities, there's no doubt that it's very…inefficient. A while ago, I finally gave in and had my mom teach me how to use a sewing machine (for the third time, probably).

See, I always thought sewing machines were scary. Sewing by hand is such a quiet activity, and in comparison, that noisy thing my mom used seemed like it wanted to eat me up along with the fabric, and I'd never keep up with it for more than a few minutes. Her new, larger machine (it’s embedded to its own table) isn't that noisy, though, so I was finally able to sit down and learn how to use it—my mom was reluctant to have me start on that one, because the pedals are crazy sensitive, but I'm kind of managing it.

Anyways. My dad bought some cushions for the sofa recently (and immediately threw them aside because he's allergic to the polyester fabric the covers are made out of), so I figured he wouldn't mind if I brought one to my room. Problem is, besides being made of the worst fabric known to man, said cushion covers were also really ugly. I like my room to be pretty, and it was really killing the vibe. I figured it was a nice opportunity to put those skills to good use, so I looked up a tutorial on YouTube. I didn't want to learn how to attach a zipper on top of trying to work a machine, so I went for this one. Nothing simpler than sewing rectangles together.

I wanted something nice and colorful so I made a patchwork for the front panel:

Crazy wonky because I couldn't sew a straight line if my life depended on it

For some reason, the thread kept escaping the needle at first, and I didn't know how to thread it, so I had to keep calling my mom to help me out (^~^;)ゞ This used to happen a lot when I first started sewing by hand, too. I used to run up to the old lady who was teaching me so she could thread the needle for me(it took quite a while until I learned how to do it myself…)

I've done patchwork stuff by hand a few times, and it always took ages, but with the machine, I was able to sew something this big so fast that I barely registered what I was doing. I was so impressed. This is next level! Sewing machines are insane!Thank you, whoever invented them!

I had no further difficulties and was able to finish the project without breaking a sweat.

The finished product, laid flat in all its wonky glory

Here's a before and after (with one of the other aforementioned vibe-killing ugly cushions):

There's a lot of room for improvement, but I like how it turned out!

I think it looks nice in my little corner. Since I got that table I've been spending a lot of time here, as opposed to my bed or my desk.

Anyways, I've got a lot of manga to read, so that's all for today!
